J is for JULY, 18th

The 18th July is a very special day in South Africa as it is the birthday of our iconic Nelson Mandela.

I doubt that there are many people who have never heard of “Madiba” as we fondly call him.

He was the leader of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa in the 1940’s and after spending 27 years in prison, became the first Black President in South Africa to be elected in a fully Democratic  election on April, 27, 1994.  Madiba was 77 years old at that time.  In 1993 he shared the Nobel Peace Prize with President FW de Klerk who had assisted in his release from prison.  He “retired” from politics in 1999 but continued with a busy schedule raising money for his Mandela Foundation, serving as a mediator in the Burundi Civil War and writing several books.
